The Fifth Delight
Shri Raghavendra Gurusarvabhauma
89. Protector of the Orphaned
As Shriyavara's procession was traveling along the Chikkodi-Bijapur route, they came across a dry region devoid of vegetation, trees, or water. Having traveled continuously since morning, all the members of the monastery's retinue were weary. While traveling along that route, in the middle of the way, a Brahmin, due to the intense heat of the sun and without access to water, had collapsed, life nearly gone from him. At that moment, he was trapped in the deadly grip of Yama’s fierce monkey-like fist. Seeing the pitiable condition of that Vipra (Brahmin), the Guru’s tender heart melted with compassion.
Holding the staff, Shriyavaru meditated for a moment and exclaimed, “Come, Mother Bhagirathi!” and struck the earth once with the staff. What a wonder! As if she had been waiting for the call of the devoted Yati (ascetic) leader, Bhagirathi sprang forth from the womb of the earth and began to flow. With joy, the Guru sprinkled that sacred water upon the nearly-deceased Brahmin and meditated. He instructed the doorkeeper to pour Ganga water into the Brahmin's mouth. The merciful infinite Lord took pity on the earth-dwelling Brahmin marked by fate. The blessings of Santasārvabhauma, who was deeply contemplative of Shri Hari in his infinite form, bore fruit!
Like someone awakening from sleep, the Brahmin slowly stirred! Upon seeing the radiant and auspicious face of the Guru—clad in saffron robes, staff in hand, emanating divine brilliance and smiling gently—he realized he had been revived. Recognizing the Guru as a great being, he bowed in overflowing joy and said, “O most glorious one! Infinite salutations to you who saved this orphan, who had fallen into the grip of death. I shall never forget your grace.”
The Guru said, “Know that it was not I who saved you, but Shri Hari Vayu. May auspiciousness be yours,” and blessed him.
The scholars of the Shri Math, who daily witnessed the exceeding greatness of the Guru, rejoiced and sang praises of the Guru’s compassion and glory. Shri Padangalavaru’s journey continued.
